For years, iDEAL has been the standard for online payments in the Netherlands. Yet a big change is about to take place: iDEAL is to be absorbed into the European payment platform Wero. What exactly does this transition entail, when will it happen and what do you, as a merchant, need to arrange practically?
Why the move to Wero?
The move to Wero is a strategic choice of the European Payments Initiative (EPI). In this initiative, 16 major European banks (including ABN AMRO, ING and Rabobank) are working together on a single uniform European payment standard.
Where iDEAL stops at the border, Wero continues. This makes it easier for you as a merchant to sell outside the Netherlands with a payment method customers trust.
The timeline: when does what happen?
The transition will take place in phases:
- January 2026 (Now): Start of co-branding phase. You will see the combined iDEAL | Wero logo appearing more and more often. For consumers, the payment flow is not changing at the moment.
- April 2026: The first transactions are actually being processed through the new Wero infrastructure.
- End 2026: The Wero brand will become more prominent. New features such as purchase protection and ‘buy now, pay later’ will be integrated directly into the wallet.
- End 2027: The name iDEAL will disappear for good. From now on, Wero will be the only brand name on payment buttons.
As a merchant, what do you need to arrange practically?
While much of the transition is done through your Payment Service Provider (PSP), there are some things you need to be keen on yourself:

Parties such as Mollie or Multisafepay are currently preparing the transition. Keep an eye on your email for updates on new terms and conditions or settings to accept in your dashboard. - Update your payment provider's extension
For users of platforms such as Magento or Shopware it is essential to keep your payment provider's extensions up-to-date. The latest versions will support the new logos and updated checkout flow. - Replace the iDEAL logo with the iDEAL Wero logo
In early 2026, it's time to refresh the visuals in your webshop. Think of the logo in the footer of your website or on your information pages. The official logo and brand assets can be found here: iDEAL Wero Branding Assets.
